WHAT IS THIS.

I've watched a lot of weird movies in my time. Around the Winfrey house, that's basically what we do for fun. What I'm saying is, I might be easily amused, but I'm not easily surprised. Yet when I watched the trailer for this Japanese horror film that Netflix suggested to me, all I could think was, "What the fuck is this?" I'm not the one studying films in school, though. Have you heard of or seen this movie?

At first I was like, "Thanks but no thanks, Netflix." Now I am like, "How soon can you ship this to me?" Bonus points for the wackadoo sitcom intro stuck in the middle of this trailer. What's the deal with the trippy 60's music? What's the deal with the cat painting that looks like the work of a schizophrenic? What's the deal with this movie? I intend to find out, but I'll probably wait until Lexie's home.

So fucking scary

It's Halloween time. So...horror movies? I'm taking a class on horror movies right now, so I haven't been watching a lot outside of class, which is a damn shame. I figured, since Kerry was doing her own thang over there, I would show you a scene that I really like from not so great of a movie. Look, I watched Exorcist III so you don't have to. Trust me, this is the scene that's important.
One youtube comment said it best: "Y does that fuck me up every time!?!"

Man. This video.

I saw this video a while ago, and I'd been meaning to post about it. It's one of those videos that you never forget. It's also one of the few music videos that has actually scared me. It is directed by Eric Wareheim (and Fatal Farm worked on it!), which is strange. I guess I never really knew what he was capable of because of what he does with Tim and Eric and most of his other videos, but man. This is something. Seriously, watch it.

It looks so good. And it is so much more than just a shock I think. I can't explain it, but I know that I like it. There are parts of Tim and Eric that are creepy, and this video has something that I can't explain that I love in scary movies. What I'm saying is, Eric Wareheim, direct a horror film. Just think on it.

Something That Used to Scare Me

If you know me even a little, then you know I have a long, long list of fears, neuroses and anxieties. It's a little comforting to know that even as a child I was irrationally fearful. Take, for example, the one thing that scared me most as a kid (besides tornadoes, fires, rollercoasters and bicycles, that is): the intro to You Can't Do That on Television.

As an adult, I can look at that rationally and see it for what it is: an unashamed Monty Python rip off. But even now just seeing that gives me the nervous jitters. It's a combination of the sickly, washed-out color scheme, the unsettling noises, and the speed of everything. Sometimes at night I would lie awake, just thinking of that guy's terrible face cracking up (I wish I was kidding). When this came on TV, I would run out of the room and go hide in my parents' room behind their bed. Whatever, this is terrifying. Shut your mouth.

Book Club!

I've just read the first two stories in 20th Century Ghosts, but already I love it! Also, Alex reminded me of how it came to his attention...it was on the A.V. Club's list of Best Short Stories of 00's.
Here are a couple of links if you're interested in Joe Hill: there's Bookslut's glowing review of 20th Century Ghosts, and a really interesting profile from the New York Times.

More of the Same

We changed the mission of the blog, I guess. Now we just post great songs from 80s movies.

My feelings about this song are summed up succinctly by Youtube user DULABHAILE: "God God! I had forgotten this innocent time in my life." Sure! God God, indeed!

Even scarier.

These are some commercials from Canada. Apparently in Canada, you can stop accidents from happening by just telling people to be more careful. Also in Canada, they're willing to spend a ton of money on an ad campaign about accident prevention. If these kinds of accidents happen all the time in Canada, then I never want to go back there.

Tis the Season

Halloween is just around the corner, and by that, I mean at the end of the month. It's a very exciting time of the year for everyone. I found this weird clip to get you in the mood, and hopefully scare Kerry (it's not hard). I hope you enjoy.
Fartfully yours,
Alex

Hey guys. I saw a movie.

I went and saw Paranormal Activity last night....with this lady.

Anyway, it was a sold out midnight showing, and it was totally bananas. It was so much fun! I would definitely recommend it. There were a few people that didn't like it. The couple walking out in front of us were saying, "Like, that would scare me if I were in seventh grade. Yeah, it creeped me out a little bit." There was also a comic-book-guy type screaming something like, "Give me Saw V, Saw VI, Saw VII anyday!" I guess he didn't like it either. Other than that though, everyone was super into it, including that lady up there. There were a lot of whispers of, "holy shit" and "fuck that". Winfrey seal of approval.

Bob Odenkirk He Ain't

In case you didn't know, I have an unfortunate interest in serial killers and cults. This is unfortunate because I am also the most scared person I know. I mean, I live my life assuming that I could be attacked and killed at any moment, so I really don't need to watch the History Channel's special on Manson, aptly titled "Manson." But here I am, 45 minutes into it.
So far, it's weird. There are interviews with Catherine Share (who was called Gypsy by the Manson family, but she probably wasn't named after a Fleetwood Mac song like H's rabbit), as well as some dudes who are apparently Manson historians (dream job! How do I get it?). But the makers of this special made a weird, weird, weird, choice. Instead of using actual footage from this time (Youtube assures me there's more than enough to fill a two hour special), they opted to recreate pivotal scenes. Entertainment Weekly said that the re-enactments give it a made-for-TV-movie feel, and they are right! I feel like I'm watching the strangest Lifetime movie ever made. Also, the guy they picked to play Manson looks strangely like Pete Yorn. And honestly, he does not act that much like the Charles Manson I've seen on TV before.
This is how Charles Mason acts, right?

Which isn't to say that it isn't interesting. The most interesting part (for me, anyway) is that Catherine Share looks like such a normal person now. She's wearing a jacket, lookin' like someone's mom. Yet she was totally caught up in this crazy cult that started out with LSD and orgies and quickly evolved into a barely logical murder scheme.
The re-enactments have become more violent (Mason just cut off an ear!) so I'll end this now. The last time I watched a special on the Manson Family ("Unsolved Murders of the Manson Family"), I had horrific nightmares. I don't think this will have the same effect, but we will see.

The Bagheads (that's what it was called, right?)

Since I'm one of those Women Who Love Horror Films, I finally (at Alex's urging) watched Baghead last weekend. I know he already posted this trailer at least once, but here it is again. Watch it! Really!

Except don't watch it if you're going to a cabin in the middle of the woods in Kentucky that weekend. I really can't believe Alex allowed me to watch it on Friday night, knowing full well that we were leaving Saturday on our trip. I spent the whole weekend worrying about Bagheads. And Alex (of course) tried to scare me but I was on the lookout the whole weekend so it didn't work. I had to watch for Bagheads, you know?
Another reason to watch this movie is that it stars Jon Lovitz Baby a.k.a. one of the main actors. He's the one who looks like Jon Lovitz as a baby.
